Derry City & Environs
Derry / Londonderry has long been a deeply divided city, with tensions between the historically Loyalist / Unionist (mainly Protestant) community and the historically Nationalist / Republican (mainly Roman Catholic) community flaring sporadically. These differences are reflected in the city’s alternative names.
A good story goes that a local superhero has to wear distinct identificatory logos according to the neighbourhood he finds himself in. On learning of a damsel in distress in a Nationalist area, he makes for the nearest telephone box to change and emerges in his mask, boots, tights and cape with “Derryman” blazoned across his chest, and the locals cheer and wave as he performs mighty deeds of deringdo. On learning of a damsel in distress in a Unionist area, he also makes for the nearest telephone box to change and emerges in his mask, boots, tights and cape with “L’Derryman” blazoned across his chest, and the locals glare and hiss “‘L apostrophe D‘ is not good enough!!”
